There are many processes in the manufacturing of medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and biotech products that generate static electricity. These issues are compounded by low humidity and the flammable nature of some of the solvents and fine powders used.

Problems can range from product misbehaviour to shocks to operators. Although many are not harmful, they are still troublesome and negatively impact productivity or the quality of the product.

Fraser has developed a range of solutions for the life sciences industry that solves the issues of static in order to maintain and improve quality, productivity and safety within its manufacturing environments.

Industry Applications
Static Elimination in Medical Isolator / Gloveboxes

Isolator/Gloveboxes are usually negatively pressurised. The dry continuous air or gas flows generate troublesome environmental static charges that can cause attraction of contaminants or product misbehaviour.

Removing Static Charges During Inhaler Valve Cleaning

For medical devices such as inhaler valves, it is essential to ensure the airways are free from contamination. The purging process at the cleaning station can generate static charges and may not remove particles held in place by existing static charges.

Static Control for Hard Tablet Collection Bins

Hard tablets are very dry and the subsequent and numerous collisions of these tablets during collection can cause very high static charges within the collection container. These charges can cause painful operator shocks as well as unwanted contamination attraction.

Eliminate Static on Pharmaceutical Vibratory Bowl Feeders

Small pharmaceutical components or tablets being oriented into the right position by bowl feeders for transportation on single line delivery systems can generate charges that cause static attraction or repulsion of those parts.

Increased Yield of Pharmaceutical Vial Filling

Laminar-flow air on pharmaceutical vial filling stations bathes the line, but can generate very high static charges on surfaces within the critical environment. These static charges will attract contaminants and can corrupt the sensitive electronics of the checkweighing stations.

Improved Medical Test Strip Handling

In the manufacture of medical-liquid test strips, chemically pre-treated card-like sheets are slit into slim strips of liquid testing tabs. When being funnelled into their final packaging containers, the statically charged lightweight strips can stick to each other and to the walls of the funnel.

Improve Accuracy of Dose Weighing

The most accurate balances are affected by even low static charges which increase the weight of the sample.

Static Charges from Tablet Blister Packaging

Static charges generated in the thermoformed blister pack filling process can lead to the repulsion of tablets or capsules, product jams, attraction of contaminants and poor blister pack sealing.

Increase Accuracy of Capsule Dose Weighing

At capsule filling stations, static charge can cause dose weighing to be inaccurate as a result of the material adhering to the weighing plate and not dropping as required. Additionally, static electricity can also corrupt the sensitive electronics.
