  • Packaging

Static issues in packaging can be costly and wasteful.  They can prevent packages from filling correctly, forcing product to misbehave. Static can also create sealing issues and numerous problems with label printers and applicators, shrink wrappers, containers and webs.

Fraser’s range of static generation equipment can also be incorporated into packaging processes replacing the need for conventional adhesives wherever temporary adhesion is required.

The technical experts at Fraser have developed static control and generation solutions to prevent packaging applications from becoming adversely affected by static.

Industry Applications
Static Control for Blister Packaging

The thermo-vacuum forming process is static generative with the result that a stack of trays can be highly charged. Sometimes there can be a problem de-nesting the trays or, more usually, the static problems are associated with the filling of the trays with product.

Static Affecting Inkjet Coding and Marking

Many products need to be date-coded or marked with inkjet printers. If the package is statically charged then this can affect the print quality, cause print-head contamination or damage sensitive electronics.

Wrapping, Weighing and Labelling

Static electricity causes severe problems throughout the packaging industry, including in wrapping, printing and labelling processes.

Static Electricity in Sleeving Machines

The productivity of sleeving machines is badly affected by static electricity in the sleeve film. This leads to product misbehaviour.

Bad Sealing in Vertical Form Fill Machines

Static electricity on the film attracts the product which causes bad sealing on the top and bottom of the bags. This is a common problem with light and dusty products.

Using Electrostatics to Apply Protective Films

Electrostatics can be used to stick a protective film or paper to a sheet.

Eliminate Static from Wrapping Machines

If a static charge is present during over-wrapping, flow-wrapping or shrink-wrapping, amongst other wrapping operations, various issues can occur. The film can bond to itself or the machine, refuse to leave the reel or even wrap around rollers.

Static Elimination for Label Applicators

Having static electricity present during a label application process can present many problems including the attraction of contaminants in addition to miss-application of the label.

Improved Horizontal Pouch Filling

Horizontal pouch filling stations often suffer from unwanted product attraction to the top of the pouch. This impairs the sachet sealing.

Increase Accuracy of Metal Detection Tunnels

Static charges on the outer packing of products entering a metal detection tunnel can create 'false-positive' results and be rejected by the system as containing metal.

Electrostatic Adhesion for In-Mould Labelling (IML)

If the synthetic label is statically charged, it has the ability to adhere to the inside of the tool so that it can be incorporated into the moulding. Low volume applications can be addressed by hand, whereas there are different ways of charging the label on automatic systems.

Static Generators for Non-Stop Winding

Non-stop winding is frequently used on printing and converting applications where the machine cannot be stopped to swap a rewind reel when it is full. Static Generation provides temporary adhesion to begin the next reel. It replaces manual and automatic taping machines. One customer was using €100K of double-sided sticky tape each year throughout its factories.

Compact Winding and Air Exclusion in Bag Production

Electrostatics can be used to squeeze the air out of multi-layer products, such as rubbish or refuse bags, so that the end-product is as compact and tightly wound as possible.

Electrostatic Adhesion of Loose Labels

There are many applications where a loose item such as a label, an advertising insert, operating instructions, etc, is added to a moving product. Using electrostatics is a simple, clean and controllable way to prevent these loose items from sliding off.

Temporary Adhesion of Shrink Wraps

Holding the shrink film on the package as it goes into the shrink tunnel is an easy job for a static generator.

Transfer Labelling

Electrostatics can be used to stick a label to a transfer drum. The drum then applies the adhesive side of the label to the product.

Static Control for Bag Making

Static electricity causes problems throughout the bag making industry. Fraser offers cost-effective solutions to all of these problems.

Edge Pinning for Web Lateral Control

If there is lateral movement of a web this can lead to a finished reel where the edges are not together. Such reels will not be acceptable to customers and they may need to be rewound or have more trim removed because of damage.

Using Electrostatics to Apply Protective Films

Electrostatics can be used to stick a protective film or paper to a sheet, for example, the protective plastic film found on stainless steel or polycarbonate sheets.
